Celebrity Salon Launch - Good luck girls!

I would like to wish a couple of friends the very best of luck in the new reality TV3 show, Celebrity Salon.

Picture: Model Pippa O'Connor

Fellow Assets model Pippa O'Connor will be taking part. Pippa is a successful model and stylist and also has strong equestrian connections because her brother is Irish International showjumper, Cian O'Connor. Pippa wore a vibrant orange dress for the launch event which took place in Café en Seine last Thursday evening.

Picture: Actress Leigh Arnold

I would also like to wish Leigh Arnold the best of luck. The petite actress looked stunning at the launch in Café en Seine, opting for a sophisticated grey Grecian ensemble,  accessorised with a chunky black bangle.

Picture: Television presenter, Virginia Macari

Completing the cast for the show is vivacious television presenter Virginia Macari, Celia Holman Lee, Breffny Morgan and Brian Dowling. Good luck to those all taking part and catch the first episode on TV3 this Monday at 9pm.

Tragedy strikes Great Britain with a massacre in Cumbria

Great Britain is currently in a somber mood. The Cumbrian massacre is one of the most tragic events to have occurred in decades and with one individual responsible for inflicting extensive pain and grief, emotions are understandably heightened. Twelve people were shot dead in cold blood, and others remain critically injured. Not only have innocent people become victims of a dreadful crime, but friends, family and the local community have been left with permanent scars of the horrific day.

Picture: Garry Purdham, a farmer and rugby league

fanatic, was one of the Derrick Bird's helpless victims

As we try to understand the motives and fathom an explanation for Derrick Bird's brutal act, gun licensing laws have come under fresh scrutiny. However, another issue more prominently discussed is mental health. Some commentators have asserted that there should be better measures in place for identifying potential threats, however mental health is an extremely complex issue. It can be incredibly hard for a sufferer to identify an illness, let alone an outsider. It is not as simple as having a broken leg or a headache, mental illness can be discreet and often unrecognisable.  This is why charities such as Aware and Mind are crucial in offering support, and by continuing to raise the awareness of these organisations we can help generate a stronger support network.

Picture: Mind (England & Wales) and Aware (Ireland)

are both vital mental health charities

Predicting the events of Wednesday would have been impossible; however prevailing circumstances are indicating a tentative explanation that portrays an angered man who simply lost control with horrendous consequences.

on which he murdered 12 innocent

people including his twin brother David.

This week the world prematurely lost some talented and precious souls. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those involved in the horrific crime which unfolded in Cumbria.

Rest in Peace and never be forgotten:

Buck's Townhouse is THE place to party this Bank Holiday!

Buck's Townhouse is currently THE place to be seen in Dublin and the exclusive nightclub has a fantastic schedule of entertainment lined up for the Irish Bank Holiday. Not only will top class DJ's Ray Shah and Rory Long take to the decks, but on Sunday evening British Glamour model, Lauren Pope, will be spinning the tunes alongside talented Dublin DJ, Ivano Cafolla.

The doors open at 11pm and the IT crowd will no doubt dress to impress. Stunning Assets model Michelle McGrath is the main hostess and this weekend she will be joined by fellow Assets beauties Leah O'Reilly and Jodie Wood.

Leah will be welcoming guests on Saturday.

The Flora Women's Mini Marathon beckons!

It's that time of year again folks! The forthcoming Irish bank holiday weekend heralds the annual Flora Women's Mini Marathon in Dublin. The 10k race is the biggest all female event of its kind with over 40,000 women donning their trainers and taking to the streets of Dublin. It is a particularly historic occasion in Ireland as before the first race took place in 1983 it was virtually unheard of for women to train in public.

Picture: Laura Toogood competing in the

2009 Flora Women's Mini Marathon

This year I am encouraging people to support the work of Link Community Development Ireland. The vision for this charity is to develop a world where all children have access to high quality education. The main focus is creating and delivering innovative programmes that promote access to quality education in sub-Saharan Africa. The charity uses their work in Africa as a platform for promoting development education, whilst also increasing awareness of such development issues in Irish schools. As Rachel McGauran highlights, "We are a small charity that achieves amazing results with a limited budget."

I would be very grateful if any readers of Tales of the Pink Bike can offer a donation to Link Community Development Ireland. All charities need support and often smaller ones can be overshadowed during a big fundraising event such as the Flora Women's Mini Marathon. This is your chance to offer some extra help to a very worthy cause.

You can donate by CLICKING HERE.

Link Community Development Ireland

The Pink Bike would love to compete on Monday, but sadly it has to be replaced by my running attire. I would like to wish anyone taking part in the big race the very best of luck. Personally, I find the course surprisingly tough. Initially I was fooled into thinking it was a relatively easy track because of the predominantly flat ground it covers. However, in order to record a personal best (PB) you must maintain a consistent pace, with no respite. I recorded a PB in the Edinburgh Great Run last month on a very undulating course. I intend to take a more relaxed approach to the Flora Women's Mini Marathon because I don't believe this terrain is particularly favorable towards my running style.

Picture: Insider tip - stock up on Powerade - it is

also a great hangover cure!!

If you are taking part don't forget to stay well hydrated. An insider tip is to drink Powerade. I find it very vitalizing... incidentally it is also a brilliant hangover cure!

Welcome Organic Flower Power: The magic of green tea

I am thrilled to welcome Organic Flower Power as a supporter of Tales of the Pink Bike.

Organic Flower Power is a leading distributor of fine loose teas and premium coffees in Dublin. The company sell over 160 loose teas along with 40 different varieties of coffees. The organic products are available online and also at a traditional tea shop located on Berkeley Street in Dublin 7.

Picture: Organic Flower Power Tea Shop and Tea Rooms
9 Berkeley Street, Dublin 7

As followers of Tales of the Pink Bike will know, I take regular exercise and maintain a healthy diet; however I strongly believe that drinking green tea helps you stay in shape. I have noticed that as long as I consume green tea on a regular basis, I can be less strict with my diet and I won't pile on the pounds.

Green tea contains a chemical known as Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), which aids thermogenesis, or heat production, by influencing enzymes in the metabolic process. EGCG increases the amount of calories burned throughout the day and it can enhance any activity from digesting food to climbing stairs. Green tea may not be a quick fix for achieving a beach body, but I believe it can assist calorie burning if included in your daily diet.

Picture: Organic Flower Power Tea Shop and Tea Rooms
9 Berkeley Street, Dublin 7

Not only can green tea help you achieve a healthy figure, but it can also be used to treat digestive or respiratory infections and possesses therapeutic properties for the treatment of cancer. As Organic Flower Power explains, "Scientific studies have shown that both green and black teas prevent cavities and gum disease, and increase the body's antioxidant activity. Numerous studies have demonstrated the anti-cancer properties of antioxidant polyphenols which can be found naturally in green teas."

I recommend that readers of Tales of the Pink Bike log onto Organic Flower Power's Online Shop to browse their extensive range and purchase some green tea today.

Forget Girl Power, its Garlic Power - mossys hate it!!

The Pink Bike spent last week in Spain. It was wonderful to enjoy warm temperatures and sunny weather. Of course I packed my Australian Gold, which as I have said before is without doubt the best and most effective sun cream on the market. I have never once burnt when using this sun cream and the special accelerator formula enhances the tanning process, ensuring you develop beautifully bronzed skin.

Together we conquered the evil mosquitoes on our girly holiday

A girly week in Southern Spain with two of my best friends entailed plenty of sunbathing, lots of girly chats and a few cocktails! All in all I enjoyed a fabulous short break and the only problem we encountered (apart from several blonde moments!) was the evil mosquitoes. However I am delighted to report that between the three of us we have conquered the wicked insects. Spraying and swatting on the first day helped ease the amount of bites we received, however it did not completely prevent the attacks. After coping with some itchy lumps we resorted to an old wives tail: Garlic.

Picture: Our secret weapon, Garlic!

We tottered down to the local market and bought a large bulb of the delicious vegetable. After chomping on a few cloves we soon found that the mosquitoes buzzed off into the hills…although I'm pretty sure the same thing would have happened if any visitors had popped by. Three girls reeking of Garlic would have sent anyone packing, not just the mosquitoes! However, we were triumphant and have officially found the most effective repellent. If you can stomach it, I would strongly recommend tucking into some Garlic before heading to a mossy climate.

Samsung 3D Television Launch Party

Samsung 3D Launch
(Picture: www.contactmusic.com)

Last week Tales of the Pink Bike attended the Samsung 3D Television Launch. The event took place in Dublin's Grand Canal Theatre with Craig Doyle and Rosanna Davison on hand to unveil the spectacular new technology. Samsung chose to replace the traditional red carpet with blue, and Rosanna matched perfectly in a stunning marine-blue Topshop dress. The weather was beautiful and I chose to coordinate my outfit with the Pink Bike by teaming black accessories with a hot pink summer dress.

Craig introduced the new technology from Samsung and emphasized how it will transform viewing, particularly sport. The television is accompanied by comfortable 3D glasses; however future technology aims to remove the need for these. Those who attended the launch were given a sneak preview of the output whilst watching snippets from a Black Eyed Peas concert and a rugby match, both of which are transformed when viewed in 3D. The slim line television offers outstanding picture quality and the 3D effect is amazing, I would say it is superior to the cinematic experience.

The exclusive event was well supported and celebrity hypnotist Katie Jane Goldin was among the guests. Katie Jane and I both changed our hair colour from blonde to brunette at the same time last year and although I decided to brighten my locks for the summer, Katie Jane is really enjoying life on The Dark Side, "I love being dark and I am finding it much healthier for my hair so I will definitely keep the colour for a while".

Katie Jane is a renowned hypnotist from The Paul Goldin Clinic and uses her skills to help conquer addictions such as smoking, and also for a variety of other issues such as helping top sportspeople perform under pressure. She was joined at the Samsung event by friend, Emma Phelan, a keen horse rider who is currently launching a new production company in Wicklow.

Mo Kelly wore a vibrant red top, which she accessorised with a striking turquoise necklace. The talented DJ spun the decks late into the night whilst guests enjoyed sampling a variety of canapés and beverages.

Tales of the Pink Bike welcomes Buck's Townhouse

I am delighted to announce Buck's Townhouse as a supporter of Tales of the Pink Bike. The plush club is located on Lower Leeson Street in Dublin and boasts an exclusive VIP Boudoir Suite which has just been voted Best VIP Room at this year's InDublin Magazine Awards.

Picture: Don't miss Caprice's first Irish DJ set this

This Friday Caprice will play her first ever Irish DJ set and stunning Assets models Michelle McGrath and Sara Kavanagh will be looking after guests on the evening. It is definitely a night not to be missed!

Need a beach body without spending hours in the gym? FitFlops are the answer!

Summer is finally upon us and thanks to the glorious weather this weekend I braved my bikini for the first time. Admittedly, I have been a little lax of late with my workout schedule. Needless to say, exposing extra flesh over the weekend was a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining a regular exercise regime!

Picture: Summer has arrived

As followers of Tales of the Pink Bike will know, I am a bit of a fitness fanatic. I enjoy training for my 10K races and also working out at Pilates Plus Dublin, but both of these require time commitment. For those who struggle to fit a workout into their schedule, FitFlops are the perfect accessory this summer.

I would strongly recommend replacing your traditional sandals with fashionable FitFlops which not only help you stay in shape whilst you walk, but also improve posture and relieve back pain. The wonderful shoes are proven to tone your thighs and bum muscles and genuinely help you achieve your dream beach body.

Picture: Fitflops help you achieve your
dream beach body without the gym workouts

This summer, FitFlop are also launching the first ever Medilogic Foot Pressure Mapping System in Dublin. In just ten minutes you can gain a clearer understanding about exactly what is happening in your shoes, in terms of foot pressure and contact, simply by wearing a pair of insoles. At the end of each pressure mapping session, you will realise the difference in contact and pressure your foot endures while wearing certain shoes in comparison to wearing FitFlop sandals.

Picture: Fitflops are availble in many
different colours and designs

Personal consultations will be available at the following Dublin stores this summer:

Arnotts, 12 Henry St, Dublin 1 Saturday, 29th May and Sunday, 30th May

Champion Sports, Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum, Dublin 14 Saturday, 19th June and Sunday 20th June

Champion Sports,  Liffey Valley Shopping Centre,  Fonthill Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 22 on Saturday, 26th and Sunday, 27th June

Picture: The workout sandals can be worn by
both men and women looking to achieve a toned physique

FitFlops are suitable for both men and women and I bought my first pair of the magic shoes last summer. Not only did I find them extremely comfortable, but they also dramatically improved my posture and the muscle definition in my legs.

However I have one crucial insider tip: Do not make the mistake of putting them in the washing machine…my white pair puffed out and ended up resembling Michelin men!!

Striking style at The Real Runway Launch

Last night the Pink Bike arrived at the launch party for The Real Runway. The event took place at one of London's top clubs, Whisky Mist, which is located in Mayfair. The popular celebrity haunt regularly welcomes Princes William and Harry and their respective girlfriends, Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy. It is also favoured by footballers Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole, and has welcomed international music stars including the lovely Rihanna, who I partied with in Barbados last year.

Picture: Celebrity haunt, Whisky Mist in Mayfair

Vodka cocktails were served throughout the evening to the fashion crowd, who were inspired by the runway theme and wore some daring outfits that wouldn't look out of place on John Galliano's catwalk.

Picture: Laura Toogood with

The Real Runway is an online fashion magazine which has been launched by established fashion writer, Ellen Grace Jones. Ellen spoke exclusively to Tales of the Pink Bike regarding the website's provocative angle on fashion, "The reviews are not always positive as I like to make sure we take a slightly controversial stance."

Picture: Laura Toogood with fellow

Assets and Target model, Charlotte McCabe

I was accompanied to the stylish party by fellow Assets and Target model, Charlotte McCabe. Charlotte looked effortlessly stunning in a sleek white Topshop dress, while I chose to embrace the aqua-marine trend by wearing a dress from M&Co which has lovely jewel detail.

Picture: Irish designer Marion Bergin with Kath Blunden

Spotted amongst the trendy crowd was Irish designer Marion Bergin. Marion took an unconventional path when embarking on her fashion career. Rather than studying the profession she chose to read History of Art and Italian at Trinity College Dublin before starting her online store for alternative fashion, Bitching & Junkfood.

Picture: Julia Mawhinney & Calum Walsh

Guest at the launch included stunning Julia Mawhinney and Calum Walsh, who turned heads with their chic style. Anna Voosenko, Liz Outram and Leonie Cumiskey also impressed with their edgy ensembles.

Without doubt, the most inspiring outfit on the evening was worn by BOW! designer, Davy Limliman Vallece. Her red patient headpiece stood out from the crowd and her outlandish style was widely commended.

Tatler Restaurant of the Year Awards

One of the most exciting social engagements I recently attended in London was the Tatler Restaurant of the Year Awards. The event is a highlight on the social calendar and I was lucky enough to have an exclusive invitation which enabled me to report for Tales of the Pink Bike. I am delighted to inform readers that the Pink Bike has coped well with negotiating the busy London traffic and it is also enjoying a hectic schedule!

Picture: Laura Toogood

The awards take place annually and this year they were held in the prestigious Langham Hotel, which is located on Regent Street. This was the first time The Langham had hosted the evening and the luxury venue provided the perfect location for the esteemed awards. Victoria Higgins of Tatler commented, "We normally change the venue of the awards every year, for example they were held in the The Dorchester last year. This year we chose The Langham and we are thrilled by the turnout at this wonderful venue".

Picture: The Langham Hotel, Regent Street

The event was supported by Taste of London and Laurent-Perrier Champagne, the latter offering exquisite vintage bubbles on arrival and throughout the ceremony proceedings.

The awards principally reflect Tatler's view on the top restaurants in London but they also encompass a selection of other UK locations and international entries were evident this year. The awards are held in conjunction with the release of the restaurant guide, which accompanies the June issue of Tatler.

Picture: The June issue of Tatler

Ten awards were offered during the evening; arguably the most prestigious being the Laurent-Perrier Lifetime Achievement Award. This was duly accepted by Sir Terence Conran who quipped, "Although I am delighted to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, I do believe I still have an awful lot more to do!" He was quick to credit those who have aided his career progress, "My partner and wife, together with all the chefs, have formed an incredibly supportive team over the years."

During his acceptance speech Sir Terrence Conran also strongly encouraged restaurateurs and diners alike to embrace alfresco dining over the coming months, "Anybody who has a garden or a rooftop can I please urge you to use it. Even in often miserable weather conditions people still want to sit outdoors. Outdoor dining is in high demand."

The Exclusive V05 Haircare Launch in London's West End

As previously mentioned, Tales of the Pink Bike visited London last week to report from some exclusive events taking place in the English capital. A highlight on the calendar was the V05 Haircare Launch, which took place in the Oui Rooms in the West End. Celebrity hairdresser, Aaron Dorn provided a detailed demonstration aimed at achieving the perfect blow dry. Aaron is incredibly experienced and has worked with most of the top names in fashion. He has styled Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen shows as well as Vivian Westwood campaigns.

Picture: Laura Toogood with celebrity hairdresser,

Aaron Dorn, who spoke exclusively to

Tales of the Pink Bike about his

recent shoot with Alexandra Burke

Aaron exclusively revealed his latest project to Tales of the Pink Bike, "I am really excited about one of my most recent shoots. It involves Alexandra Burke who is wearing a fantastic purple wig whilst portrayed as a superhero. Alexandra is lovely to work with and this shoot will be well publicised so keep your eyes peeled over the coming months."

Picture: Aaron Dorn's most recent

celebrity client, Alexandra Burke

Aaron has worked with most of Britain's top models, including Lily Cole and Agyness Deyn, so his presence in the Oui Rooms was highly anticipated. Bellini cocktails and canapés were served throughout the demonstration, which focused on using the brand new range of V05 hairsprays that are available in snazzy electric pink and purple packaging.

Picture: Agyness Deyn is one of many

top fashion names on Aaron's client list

Aaron gave an impressive guide on how to achieve the perfect blow dry by demonstrating his techniques on stunning MOT Model, Jessica Martin. He explained that the hair should blasted dry before being sectioned into small pieces so that it is easy to manage. Aaron emphasised the importance of using hairspray on each section before applying heat from the blowdryer. Pre-spraying each section of hair helps protect it from the first impact of damaging heat. The hair dryer should then be held at 90 degrees to the hair as this helps flatten flyaway strands.

Picture: Stunning Jessica Martin

was Aaron's model for the launch

The hair should be rolled around a large round brush and blasted with heat. The brush should then be left positioned in the hair for a few minutes as this helps achieve a bouncy wave. It can be useful to have two round brushes at hand so that whilst one remains positioned in the hair, you can begin working on the next section. Aaron's final secret for achieving a flowing mane is to make sure the root is completely dry as this controls the direction of the hair.

Picture: Guests at the exclusive launch

were kindly given gift bags stocked full of

a range of V05 haircare products

The Alberto Balsam range is extremely affordable however, Aaron explained that when you purchase shampoo products it is important to also buy the conditioner, 'Shampoo starts the process of opening up the cuticle. The conditioner compliments this process, ensuring that once the hair has been cleaned the cuticle sits down smoothly, preventing tangling for occurring.'

The launch was educational and guests were lucky to leave with a gift bag brimming with wonderful products which I will be able to try over the coming months.

London Preview & Candy Cakes!

Twitter and Facebook connections will be aware that I have been enjoying a busy week in London reporting for Tales of the Pink Bike. Next week blog followers can look forward to reading about the Tatler Restaurant of the Year Awards, the preview of the Jigsaw Autumn/Winter 2010 collection and several other exclusive launches and events.

I had a fantastic week and yesterday I managed to spare a few minutes to meander through Carnaby Street. As regular readers of Tales of the Pink Bike will know, Carnaby Street is probably one of my favourite fashion districts in the world. It offers an array of quirky shops and boutiques, and in a previous article I highlighted it as a shopping haven for anyone wishing to indulge in vintage fashion. It is also the home of Candy Cakes. The colourful muffins are beautifully decorated and quite frankly rather irresistible to anyone with a sweet tooth.

If any followers of the Tales of the Pink Bike are visiting central London, I would strongly suggest you pop into the homely café and sample one of the delectable treats.

Koh celebrates the Thai New Year with an exclusive party

Picture: Laura Toogood & Marisa Mackle

Koh Restaurant and Cocktail Bar recently marked the Thai New Year with an exclusive invite-only celebration in Dublin. Guests were offered a wonderful feast, which was complimented by champagne and a selection of cocktails. The food at Koh was exceptional and I would strongly recommend readers of Tales of the Pink Bike to sample the extensive menu. The layout of the restaurant includes private booths which are perfect for a sociable evening with a group of friends. The cocktail bar has a chic, cosmopolitan vibe and is ideal for a girl's night out.

Picture: Stylist Emily O'Donnell

Koh is located in Dublin's Italian Quarter and the Pink Bike travelled to Millenium Walkway for the celebratory evening. The party was well supported and guests included Assets model Naomi Cullen and PR gurus Norman Pratt and Roisin Tierney-Crowe. Beauty expert Triona McCarthy, television presenter Darren Kennedy and fashion stylist Emily O'Donnell were also in attendance.

I was accompanied to the event by author, Marisa Mackle. Marisa has just released her first children's book in collaboration with another good friend of mine, Rosanna Davison. Rosanna fulfilled the role of illustrator for The Girl in the Yellow Dress and they recently completed a promotional tour of Ireland.

Leigh Arnold is Lady Gosh

Picture: Leigh Arnold at Buck's Townhouse

Actress Leigh Arnold has been announced as Ireland's new face of Gosh Cosmetics. Last Thursday I cycled my Pink Bike to Buck's Townhouse where a launch took place to celebrate the collaboration. Cosmopolitans and other complimentary drinks were served throughout the evening. Buck's Townhouse was decorated with posters of Leigh, captioned as 'Lady Gosh'.

Picture: Leigh Arnold as the new face of GOSH

During her speech Leigh expressed excitment at representing the dynamic makeup brand, 'It is an honour and a pleasure to endorse such a beautiful product'. Leigh, who chose to wear a slinky leopard print dress from Lara Boutique, subsequently told Tales of the Pink Bike, ' I am delighted to be given the title of Lady Gosh! To me Gosh is a very high quality, yet affordable brand. With its wide range of eye and lip colours, Gosh suits a varety of people. It's been in Ireland since 2002 and now is sold in A WEAR and pharmacies across the country.' Irish dancers and singers provided entertainment late in to the night.

Picture: Model Chloe Arnold is now making her mark as a stylist

Leigh's younger sister, Chloe, looked striking in a 1940's vintage dress made in Paris. Chloe has modelled internationally with great success over the last ten years. She is now developing her career as a stylist and is proving one-to-watch in the fashion industry. Chloe was accompanied to the launch by her musician boyfriend, Justin Manville.

Picture: Izabela Chudzicka wore a stunning Julian dress

Polish television presenter Izabela Chudzicka wore a beautiful marine blue dress from popular boutique Julian. The store stocks a plentiful supply of eye-catching dresses and is located on the top floor of Stephen's Green Shopping Centre.

Picture: Actor Emmet Scanlan is preparing

for his new role in Hollyoaks

Actor Emmet Scanlan also attended the launch and spoke candidly to Tales of the Pink Bike about his forthcoming role in British soap opera, Hollyoaks, 'I am looking forward to it and because I play the bad boy there will be plenty of juicy storylines.'

Picture: Laura Toogood wearing the popular Rockin Reptile shoes

Forgetting it is still only early May, I chose to wear a summer dress which proved a little chilly as the night progressed. I accessorised my dress with the stunning Louloubelle clutch bag that I wore to the VIP Style Awards and my favourite pair of Rockin Reptile shoes, the Sienna Gold style.

Picture: Leigh Arnold with Mr World, Kamal Ibrahim

Charming Kamal Ibrahim from Limerick, who currently holds the title of Mr World, attended the launch to show his support as did Social and Personal Editor, PJ Gibbons who was joined by managing director of the magazine, Richard Kavanagh.

Singer, Claire Malone, who is recovering well from a recent virus turned heads in a vivid red silk top. Red Carpet Agency boss, Tara Sinnott, followed fashion and looked radiant in her leopard print dress.

Run of the month: The Great Edinburgh Run - A new Personal Best, TV appearance & Heat Exhaustion!

Yesterday I competed in the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run. Competing in 10k races is an exciting experience, especially when you can combine it with a weekend away. Edinburgh is a beautiful city and I previously blogged about its many historical attractions. This weekend, I was lucky enough to stay in the Balmoral Hotel which is located on North Bridge. The hotel offers a luxurious spa and incorporates the Bollinger Champagne Bar. I was able to source a relatively good deal on the accommodation by using booking.com, a popular online reservation website.

The Edinburgh Great Run is a tough course and the first three kilometres comprise a long upward hill towards Arthur's Seat. Athletes then progress to run through sloping city streets, and although the undulations are incredibly testing the stunning scenery offers some compensation.

My primary goal for 10K races is to complete under an hour. I have also previously approached every race with the aim of not breaking into a walk. However, a good friend of mine, who runs at a similar pace competed in the Women's Mini Marathon last year and took a brief walking break in order to regain her breath and subsequently recorded a quicker time. When I run steep hills, I take very small steps and although I have always worried about disturbing my rhythm by breaking into a walk, I approached this race with the idea replacing my small running steps with a power walk.

The atmosphere at the start of the race was typically electric and the crowds gathered to encourage thousands of runners. The adrenalin rush you feel as you pass the start line with crowds cheering you on energises you for the early stages of the race. Although the first kilometers of the race were up a long steep hill, I powered forward taking advantage of my adrenaline fuelled energy. Needless to say I was exhausted once I reached the top of the hill and the ensuing downward slope was welcoming. The Edinburgh Great Run has a wonderful atmosphere and bagpipe players are located at every kilometre to musically encourage runners.

A short, yet incredibly steep hill was on the horizon at 5K and this is where I first employed my new tactics. Rather than take tiny running steps to maintain momentum, I broke into a strong power walk. This enabled me to make quick progress up the hill and simultaneously regain my breath. Rather than continue to run and get slower and slower, a quick 20 metre walk break refreshed my body and enabled me to return to a faster running pace after the quick respite. I felt stronger and I was able to power forward for the next 3 ½ K.

Although the uphill parts of the race are very demanding, the succeeding downhill periods enable a quick pace to be achieved. However it is important to put effort into running downhill in order to make up time, rather than hold back and relax.

The final kilometre involved running down Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile and it was lovely to be greeted with a long slope towards the finish posts. However, by this stage my body was exhausted and the half-way water stop seemed an eon ago. I was craving hydration as I had pushed myself incredibly hard on a tough course.

My previous personal best was recorded in the 2008 Flora Women's Mini Marathon in my first ever 10K race when I completed in a time of 55.24. My new tactic at the Edinburgh Great Run paid dividends and I was thrilled to cross the finish line in a new personal best of 54.13.

My brother's girlfriend watched the race live on Channel Five TV and excitedly informed me that the camera had followed me as I approached 8K… I am not sure my red puffing face and sweaty body would have been an attractive sight for TV viewers!

Although I recorded a new personal best, I realised that I had stressed my body and pushed it out of a comfort zone. Most of my recent training times have exceeded the hour, and although it is normal to record a quicker race time, my personal best was significantly quicker than my current running pace.

I felt fatigued after the race and as the afternoon progressed I began to feel very unwell with symptoms of Heat Exhaustion becoming evident. I was experiencing feelings of nausea, muscle weakness and dizziness. Resting and guzzling endless amounts of water, Powerade and Lucozade helped ease the symptoms.

The Great Run races attract high caliber international athletes. The elite runners made light work of the demanding course with Kenyan Titus Mbishei (19) wining the men's event in a time of 28 minutes 46 seconds. Fellow Kenyan Florence Kiplagat took the women's title in 32 minutes 10 seconds.

Many fun runners participate alongside the top international and national competitors. One striking story was of a bride and groom and 20 of their wedding guests completing the Great Run just two hours before the couple got married. Anna Henley convinced friends and family to run the 10km route for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of her brother-in-law who died last year. She later married Robin McBride in a ceremony at Edinburgh Castle.

I would like to congratulate my brother who recorded a brilliant time of 48.44. My mother had a slight drama as her timing chip was mixed up with my father's timing chip. Thus her impressive completion in 50.37 minutes, which earned her second place in the Veterans, is currently substituted by my father's time of 1 hour and 7 minutes. However, the Great Run Team is hoping to restore the correct times.

The next 'Run of the Month' to feature on Tales of the Pink Bike will be the Flora Women's Mini Marathon, which takes place in Dublin.

Badminton Horse Trials

The world renowned Badminton Horse Trials is currently taking place in Gloucestershire, England. The action is well under way at the prestigious competition with riders and horses competing in the dressage phase of the event today. The cross-country component will take place on Sunday and the concluding show jumping phase is scheduled to run on Bank Holiday Monday.

Badminton Horse Trials is a highlight on the International equestrian calendar and takes place in the park of Badminton House, where the Duke of Beaufort resides. Top riders from all over the world compete for lucrative prize money and the honour of winning the esteemed title. The event is the ultimate test for horse and rider with competitors tackling three diverse phases. The dressage examines the balance, rhythm and suppleness of the horse, whilst also judging obedience and harmony between horse and rider. The cross country is the ultimate test of fitness, bravery and trust with combinations tackling natural fences and galloping over undulating ground. Finally, the show jumping challenges technical jumping skills of both horse and rider.

Badminton Horse Trials is considered by many to be the ultimate test in Three Day Eventing but is also offers numerous other attractions including extensive shopping. The Shopping Village is a Mecca for fashionable country clothing and there is an extensive exhibitors list. Holland and Cooper have designed a limited edition Badminton Hoodie this year, so it is definitely worth popping along to their stand.

I hope competitors at this years Event have an enjoyable and safe experience. I would especially like to wish my Eventing trainer, Vicky Brake, the best of luck for the competition ahead. Vicky is competing a horse called Looks Like Fun. Looks Like Fun is an athletic chestnut gelding who is owned by the former district commissioner of the Avon Vale Pony Club, Ainslie Goulstone.

Three of this year's competitors modelled at the Riders Fashion Show which I produced earlier in the year. I would like to wish these stylish ladies all the best over the coming days: Olympian Daisy Berkeley, Young Rider European Team Gold Medallist, Emily Llewellyn and Louise Skelton.

Chloe Newton, who was one of my team mates from the Junior European Championships, is also competing alongside Nici Wilson and magic little horse, Oingy Boingy. Go for it girls and good luck to all those tackling the imposing cross country phase on Sunday.

So, you want to be a model? Here's how you go about it....

Recently I have been asked by several people how you become a

model, so I thought it would be useful to offer some tips for

those looking to break into the industry.

Modelling is exciting and competitive and although it is regularly

associated with glitz and glamour, it also demands hard work and

graft.

There are various types of modelling and the only prerequisite is

height, if you aim to work as a catwalk model. If you are a

budding runway star most agencies expect you to be at least 5'8,

and even at this height you will feel on the short side when

surrounded by other catwalk models. Being tall is crucial for

fashions shows; however it is less important for other types of

modelling such as editorial and commercial work. Editorial

specifically covers fashion shoots and commercial modelling

encompasses a wider range of client, for example the

endorsement of lifestyle products.

Modelling agencies are always looking for new talent and if you

think you have what it takes to work in the industry then your

first step should involve having some photographs taken of

yourself using a digital camera. No reputable agency expects to

see a portfolio of professional images from an inexperienced

model, so a few shots from a digital camera will suffice.

When you take these pictures it is useful to stand in a well lit

area, preferably with a plain background. It is important to be

completely natural in the photographs as agencies want to see

what you really look like. You should wear little or no makeup

and take a couple of close up headshots and also some full length

body shots.

Once you have your snapshots you can contact an agency and

approach them with the pictures. Most agencies have an open

day whereby you can drop in and have a personal discussion

with the bookers. If you are under the age of 18 I would strongly

recommend a parent accompanies you. Some agencies offer an

online facility whereby you can submit your pictures to a

website.

If you are looking for guidance about which agencies to approach

then I would suggest UK followers of Tales of the Pink Bike log

onto Alba Model Information. This website offers detailed advice

to potential models and also lists 'A List' agencies according to

region. Crucially, the website also highlights model agencies that

should be avoided and those which have been 'named and

shamed' by media.

If you are in Ireland, I would suggest a quick online search to

find your closest model agent. To help identify a respectable

agency you should look out for a professional website and well

known or established models. You must be on your guard at all

times and be vary of those trying to take advantage.

It is helpful for aspiring models to gain professional advice.

If an agency believes you have potential then your portfolio will

develop over time. Reputable agencies will suggest you

participate in test shoots and you will have the opportunity to

acquire pictures in exchange for time. You should never have to

part with money for a portfolio. Remember that the modelling

industry is highly competitive and a tough working environment.

You must accept that you are judged on appearance and not let

critique effect you.
