Recently I have been asked by several people how you become a
model, so I thought it would be useful to offer some tips for
those looking to break into the industry.
Modelling is exciting and competitive and although it is regularly
associated with glitz and glamour, it also demands hard work and
graft.
There are various types of modelling and the only prerequisite is
height, if you aim to work as a catwalk model. If you are a
budding runway star most agencies expect you to be at least 5'8,
and even at this height you will feel on the short side when
surrounded by other catwalk models. Being tall is crucial for
fashions shows; however it is less important for other types of
modelling such as editorial and commercial work. Editorial
specifically covers fashion shoots and commercial modelling
encompasses a wider range of client, for example the
endorsement of lifestyle products.
Modelling agencies are always looking for new talent and if you
think you have what it takes to work in the industry then your
first step should involve having some photographs taken of
yourself using a digital camera. No reputable agency expects to
see a portfolio of professional images from an inexperienced
model, so a few shots from a digital camera will suffice.
When you take these pictures it is useful to stand in a well lit
area, preferably with a plain background. It is important to be
completely natural in the photographs as agencies want to see
what you really look like. You should wear little or no makeup
and take a couple of close up headshots and also some full length
body shots.
Once you have your snapshots you can contact an agency and
approach them with the pictures. Most agencies have an open
day whereby you can drop in and have a personal discussion
with the bookers. If you are under the age of 18 I would strongly
recommend a parent accompanies you. Some agencies offer an
online facility whereby you can submit your pictures to a
website.
If you are looking for guidance about which agencies to approach
then I would suggest UK followers of Tales of the Pink Bike log
onto Alba Model Information. This website offers detailed advice
to potential models and also lists 'A List' agencies according to
region. Crucially, the website also highlights model agencies that
should be avoided and those which have been 'named and
shamed' by media.
If you are in Ireland, I would suggest a quick online search to
find your closest model agent. To help identify a respectable
agency you should look out for a professional website and well
known or established models. You must be on your guard at all
times and be vary of those trying to take advantage.
It is helpful for aspiring models to gain professional advice.
If an agency believes you have potential then your portfolio will
develop over time. Reputable agencies will suggest you
participate in test shoots and you will have the opportunity to
acquire pictures in exchange for time. You should never have to
part with money for a portfolio. Remember that the modelling
industry is highly competitive and a tough working environment.
You must accept that you are judged on appearance and not let
critique effect you.
