HAPPY EASTER FROM TALES OF THE PINK BIKE
20 April 2011
What women REALLY mean…
Yesterday this post appeared on my Facebook newsfeed. I suppose it is mainly for the benefit of male readers, but I thought I would share it with followers of Tales of the Pink Bike for those of you who need a little mid-week giggle.
5 DEADLY TERMS USED BY A WOMAN
-
FINE - This is the word women use to end an argument when they know they are right and you need to shut up.
-
NOTHING - Means SOMETHING and you need to be worried.
-
GO AHEAD - This is a dare, not permission; DO NOT DO IT.
-
WHATEVER - A woman's way of saying 'screw you'.
-
THAT'S OK - She is thinking long and hard about how and when you will pay for your mistake.

Protect your eyes from the sun in style
I hope those based in the UK and Ireland are enjoying the beautiful, sunny weather we are currently experiencing. The clear blue skies and bright sunshine has led to a 'sunglasses hunt' and here are some favourites from Tales of the Pink Bike.
The Jenna Sunglasses from Jigsaw (£79 - pictured right) are incredibly striking and offer a vintage feel with their large frame.
The aviator style from Karen Millen (£64.95 - pictured below left) provide a more subtle option, with brown coloured lenses and a light tortoiseshell frame.
Those wanting to make a designer statement should look no further than Chanel. The bold sunglasses pictured below (£165) are truly timeless.

Boux Avenue launches with a bang
Last week a new lingerie brand called Boux Avenue was launched in the plush surroundings of Sketch in Mayfair. Tales of the Pink Bike was invited to the exclusive preview of the exciting collection.
Champagne corks popped throughout the evening and guests were offered delicious cakes as part of an 'afternoon tea' style catering presentation. The climax of the event was a burlesque style fashion show, featuring ballet dancers wearing the brand's classic lingerie. Pastels and lace featured strongly. The products, which ooze sophistication and class, are perfectly affordable with a wallet friendly price tag.
Guy Richie's girlfriend is the face of Boux Avenue and added some glamour to the proceedings, arriving in a cream Prada dress.
Sketch is an impressive venue, spanning a number of floors and with statement décor. Tales of the Pink Bike was particularly enthralled by the lavatories; as bizarrely as it may sound! The large white egg shells (pictured below) are independently located and once you enter the 'capsule', beautiful bird song begins to play leading to an au natural experience!
Feast your eyes on the Boux Avenue collection HERE.

Reach for the stars
I am thrilled to officially become Dr. Toogood!
Last week, I received a letter from the academic council, stating that my thesis had been accepted in to the library. I passed my viva examination back in December and after making just a couple of small changes, in line with the recommendations, I was able to submit the final version of my PhD thesis at the start of February. I had it bound in pink (of course!!).
The administration has now been completed and all that is left, is the graduation ceremony. It will take place later this year in Dublin and be followed by one serious party!!
I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me whilst I have been studying for my PhD. I am incredibly grateful for the two scholarships I was awarded to fund my research (Ad Astra Scholarship and UCD Postgraduate Scholarship).
My supervisor Dr. Lee Komito has been outstanding; as has everyone from the School of Information Studies at University College Dublin.
My family and friends have provided crucial support and helped me through the highs and lows of this challenge. I have hit a brick wall on more than one occasion.
Those close to me are fully aware of my 'annual PhD breakdown'. This involved crying non-stop for two days and then boring my friends and family rigid with rants about the seemingly impossible challenges you encounter whilst enduring a mammoth research project. Their sympathy and encouragement, normally offered along with a large piece of chocolate cake, seemed to make it all ok again.

I started my PhD when I was 21 years old and never really believed this day would come. In all honesty, I was the last person to ever think I would become a doctor - my regular 'blonde moments' back this up!
It feels slightly surreal, but definitely proves that if you work hard enough, you can achieve unimaginable goals.
In recent years, I have learned how important it is to surround yourself with positive and genuine people who have your best interests at heart. Not so long ago, a friend shared a wise saying; 'success is 10% talent and 90% hard work'. I strongly believe that hard work is the key to success and achievement; however, ambition is also crucial. You should tackle challenges with zest, shatter preconceptions, push the boundaries and live your dreams.
Put simply; reach for the stars.

The UCD Fashion Show is back!
I have so many fond memories of this fantastic event. Strutting down the catwalk in Dublin's O2 Arena, in front of a packed audience of 6,000 people, is enough to give anyone an adrenalin rush.
In my day, the event was produced by the great Julian Benson, who made fashion fun. Julian was like a magical injection of confidence for all the students involved.
I consider the UCD Fashion Show an important stepping stone in my career on the catwalk. When modelling for any designer, I always remember Julian's many words of wisdom and his beaming smile. He was an inspirational influence for the entire cast.
Not only is the event a wonderful introduction to the world of showbiz, it also provides students with an invaluable opportunity to establish long-lasting friendships. Many of my closest girlfriends originate from the UCD fashion show and several have developed successful careers in the entertainment industry.
Some of my University friends who have enjoyed high-profile success include Rosanna Davison (pictured above left), who won the prestigious Miss World competition; Rosalind Lipsett (pictured right), who recently graced the catwalk at New York Fashion Week; Claudine Keane who is currently the face of Ultimo and Shireen McDonagh (below left), who is Ireland's answer to Naomi Campbell.
Not forgetting the boys; Yare Jegbefume (below right) worked alongside Anna Friel and Rhys Ifans on his latest film, meanwhile Eoin Macken (bottom left) has been the face of Abercrombie and modelled for Ralph Lauren.
Personally, I found the UCD Fashion Show a life-changing event. Moving to Dublin when I was 18 years old and knowing nobody was an intimidating experience - to say the least!
I was rescued from isolation by the UCD Fashion Show, and was blown away by the warmth and enthusiasm of the cast and crew. After a s uccessful audition, rehearsals for the show soon dominated my student days. After all, strutting to Michael Jackson in the Astra Hall and catching up with all the fashion show gossip was far more appealing than venturing to the library.
After a few years respite, the show makes a welcome return this week. The event will take place on campus and I would like to wish all the models, stylists and production team the very best of luck. The show is sure to lead to exciting things in the future for many of the students involved.

Bargain alert!
My latest bargain is just too good (sorry!) to keep secret from Tales of the Pink Bike. On Monday, I was browsing Marks and Spencer food hall in Covent Garden when I got distracted by the womenswear department; specifically a pair of black skinny jeans.
It was the cut of the jeans that grabbed my attention; on first glance the style appeared flattering and chic. However, we all know that clothes have a knack of looking perfect on the hanger!
In general, I find shopping for jeans an impossible task. They never fit properly and those which come close, normally have a hefty price tag.
Despite frustrating 'Jeans Shopping' experiences in the past, I was excited by the potential of the Marks and Spencer pair and ventured forth to the changing room. To my astonishment they fitted like a glove.
Time to look at the price tag….£15!! I nearly fainted. They were not only the best fitting jeans I have tried on in years, but by far the cheapest. What a find!
Needless to say, I whipped out my wallet and even changed into them before leaving the store.

Shooting with the talented Ruan Van Der Sande
Last week I had the opportunity work with talented South African photographer Ruan Van Der Sande. Ruan is the man behind the lens for the latest Gossard campaign, featuring stunning model Elle Liberachi.
Ruan and I were shooting an editorial feature and although I am not allowed to reveal any details at the moment, I can report that the team had a very fun day! In fact, it was probably one of my most enjoyable shoots to date.
Ruan is dynamic and passionate about his work and the lovely Gabriella Ciullo did a fantastic job on hair and makeup. I have some behind-the-scenes pictures for Tales of the Pink Bike, but first I wanted share this portrait image that Ruan took before we began working on the assignment.

Skiing in Val d'Isere
Last week Tales of the Pink Bike had a short break whilst I enjoyed a ski holiday in the French Alps with my family. Here are some Toogood Tips from the trip…
Dine in 1789 - Watch the proprietor grill your streak on the old stone fire at the front of the restaurant. Few tourists dine here, making it a real hidden gem.
Drinks in Le Tsanteleina - The luxurious hotel bar has a rustic feel, with bucolic décor. The house red wine is delicious and not particularly pricey for Val d'Isere at €6.50 a glass.
Sunbathe at the Tipi Bar - If you venture high up into the mountains for a ski, you can take a break half way down the slopes and grab a lounger at the Tipi Bar. Relax on sheepskin covers and sample the Vin Chaud.
The snow park in Tignes - Ski to Val d'Isere's neighbouring resort to tackle a selection of jumps and try the slalom racing.
Watch the professionals - World Cup qualifiers were taking place on some of the slopes; spend sometime watching and learning from the best.
Lessons - Everyone can always improve. You can either hire a personal instructor (Philippe Calvin, president of Tignes Ski Club is second to none), or join ski school for a day.
Window shop - Look, but be careful what you purchase! You will pay premier prices near the piste.
Folie Douce - (pictured above) an absolute must. 'Party on the Piste' is a great way to finish your day on the slopes. Hop on the tables and dance to the hottest remixes in your ski boots. Performances by a live soloist and saxophonist ensure the atmosphere is electric. Be careful how much you drink though, as you still have to ski home. For those who want to wimp out of the ski - the lift is an option.
Après Ski - Party on the Piste clubbers head straight to Café Face in the village. However, for those wanting a live band, the Morris Bar is the place to go - a pint of Murphys is a perfect end to the day.

Gillian's stylish Hen party
Last weekend I made a flying visit to Dublin for Gillian Fitzpatrick's hen party. Over 30 ladies gathered to help Gillian celebrate the occasion.
The evening began with a glass of champagne in plush 5* hotel, The Dylan. We then dined in Keshk, a boutique restaurant on Leeson Street, which was reserved exclusively for the party. Hayley Rock, model and hostess at VIP haunt Lillies Bordello, arranged for us to dance the night away in style at the famed venue.
Bridesmaids (l-r); Laura Toogood, Selena Daly, The Bride, Ruth Fitzpatick
I feel very privileged to be Gillian's bridesmaid. She is a highly motivated and successful lady, who takes a genuine interest in the lives of those around her. A caring and supportive friend, I have no doubt she will enjoy many wonderful years of marriage to her beau, James Dargan-Ward.
On a personal level, it was lovely to return to Dublin. After spending eight years living in the city, I consider it my second home. Saturday evening provided the perfect opportunity to catch up with many of my treasured girlfriends, most of whom I met on first moving to Ireland to study at University College Dublin.
I enjoyed a wonderful stay with one of my best friends, Rosanna Davison. The top model has just moved in with her long term love, Wesley Quirke, and toasting their new abode offered even more excitement to the weekend.
I am already looking forward to returning to the Emerald Isle for Gillian's big day. With less than a month to go, excitement is rapidly building amongst the girls.

Discovering designer treasures
Charity shops offer impressive fashion bargains
Whilst power walking along the Fulham Road yesterday, I became distracted by a string of charity shops. I was initially lured into FARA by the stunning vintage jacket displayed in the window. When I checked the label to see it was Max Mara and selling for just £35, I immediately snapped it up.
Not only was I chuffed to have discovered a bargain, but it was even more satisfying to know that the money I was spending was going to a worthy cause.
Encouraged by my previous purchase, I popped into the Mind Charity Shop a few doors down, where I was greeted by an impressive selection of bags. Every bag was in impeccable condition and being sold for a fraction of the original price.
I previously assumed that charity shops only sold basic jumpers and knits. However, this could not be further from the truth and FARA (below left) prides itself on selling high-end designer clothing, along with good quality high street brands. Some items are available from as little as £1.
Donations are always needed for these shops, which rely heavily on the generosity of local communities to make them profitable. This has inspired me to a do a spring clean of my wardrobe, in the hope that I will be able to provide an item for the window display that will coax another new customer into the shop.
FARA Charity Shop - 841 Fulham Road
FARA is a charity shop that sells a range of donated clothes, books, jewellery and bric-a-brac to raise money for Romanian orphans.
Mind Charity Shop - 759 Fulham Road
Mind is a mental health charity that provides high-quality information and advice, and campaigns to promote and protect good mental health for everyone.
If you have a recommendation of a good charity shop in your area, please send an email to mail@lauratoogood.com stating the name of the shop, charity and location.

Breaking the habit
I'm booking in for a manicure!
I am proud to report that I have not bitten my nails for two whole weeks!
One of my New Year's resolutions was to break the habit and I have successfully managed to resist the urge, even on more stressful occasions! My less than elegant 'horse riding' hands are starting to look more delicate as each day passes. As a reward I will be booking my first manicure at the end of the week.
Although nail biting is a notoriously difficult habit to break, it is very rewarding. Results are noticeable within days, and healthier nails transform the appearance of hands.
The most important issue has been raising my own awareness of the habit, because I often don't even realise I am doing it. One key tip that has worked well is regularly painting my nails; seeing the varnish reminds me to stop biting them and is a softer option to those yucky tasting 'anti nail biting' polishes. I have opted for pink (of course!), but grey is presently a fashionable colour.

Last night, Tales of the Pink Bike attended the G-Star Raw event at plush London venue, One Mayfair. The fashion crowd were out in full force as British actress, Gemma Arterton, who appeared in 'Quantum of Solace', was announced as the new face.
Guests were entertained during the evening with an exhibition by Anton Corbijn, who is the creative director behind the visual output of Depeche Mode and U2. Anton has photographed many leading personalities including Kim Wilde, Robert de Niro, Stephen Hawking and Clint Eastwood. He has also designed album covers for The Rolling Stones, REM and The Bee Gees, among others. Invitees were treated to an exclusive showing of images, which had never previously been seen.
Champagne and cocktails flowed throughout the evening and Gemma was keen to express her excitement at working with G-Star.

Spring/Summer 2011 Trends
Tales of the Pink Bike highlights some key trends for this season
Colour: In a complete reverse of last year's neutral trend, camel and beige are widely replaced by bold colour. Bright neon and strong shades are well received. Don't completely neglect your more placid pieces; add a splash of colour by pairing new items with neutrals from your current wardrobe.
Statement shoes: The warmer months open the door to an array of footwear styles. The focus this year is on individuality, with quirky and unique designs triumphing.
Rockin Reptile (left) satisfy this trend

Stripes: The nautical influence is never far from any Spring/Summer collection and this year is no different. Stripes are not the easiest trend to pull off. Remember the key rule: vertical lines elongate you're body, whilst horizontal stripes add the illusion of curves.
Retro stripe long sleeve T-shirt from Jigsaw

Biker chic: Much of the latest Burberry campaign is geared towards this prominent trend. After Cheryl Cole's appearance on the cover of Elle Magazine in a leather jacket from their latest collection, the biker theme is sure to feature strongly over the coming months.

Long skirts: A subtle lowering of hemlines has been taking place for some time. 2011 heralds the full drop, as floor length skirts become a prized possession for any stylish lady. Think sweeping elegance.

*Fabulous Fashionista*
Louise O'Reilly
The first *Fabulous Fashionista* of 2011 is stunning plus size model, Louise O'Reilly. A rising star in the fashion industry, Louise is signed with several leading agencies in Europe.
Predominantly based in Dublin, the curvaceous beauty recently changed her Irish management and now appears on Rebecca Morgan's books.
A graduate of Dublin City University, Louise has posed for a number of renowned photographers and was the face of an edgy campaign (below) for talented Galway milliner, Edel Ramberg.

Following the recent death of French model Isabel Caro, who suffered anorexia nervosa, pressure continues to mount on the fashion industry to embrace natural body types.
Louise's figure is refreshingly real and Tales of the Pink Bike will follow her progress with interest as she challenges the waif-like look, which continues to dominate the fashion world.
Most Influential in Fashion Awards
Innovative Irish supermodel, Faye Dinsmore, confirms ceremony for highly anticipated awards
The Irish fashion world is buzzing with news of the inaugural 'Most Influential in Fashion Awards'. Launched by innovative Irish supermodel, Faye Dinsmore, the awards recognise leading figures in the world of fashion. Categories include 'Most Influential Designer', 'Most Influential Model' and 'Most Influential Editor', to name a few. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Dublin at the start of February.
Faye is arguably Ireland's most successful modelling export. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, she left Irish shores following the completion of her degree to pursue a career on the catwalk. Her natural Celtic look has proved hugely successful abroad and she is now on the books of world famous agency, IMG, who are notoriously selective over whom they represent.
Faye's supermodel schedule involves jetting between London, Paris and New York for high profile editorial shoots, campaigns and runway shows. The striking model regularly records her experiences on the popular website, FAYE.
I was honoured to hear that I have been nominated, and subsequently shortlisted, for Top Fashion Blogger for Tales of the Pink Bike.
If you would like to show your support by voting for Tales of the Pink Bike please click here, select number 40 and allow the application to take your vote through facebook.
You can request an invite to the awards ceremony here.

Tried & Tested
Shampoo & conditioner that delivers amazing results
If your hair is feeling a little worse for wear after the party season and is crying out for some TLC, Tales of the Pink Bike has found a vitalising shampoo and conditioner that you just have to try.
As a result of my own hair being weakened from excessive styling and colouring whilst working as a model, I am constantly on the look out for products which can help repair the damage.
Designed for use after the famous La Brasiliana Keratin Treatment with Collagen (available in selected salons), the La Basiliana Uno Keratin Shampoo and Conditioner are rich in nutritious ingredients. The products are incredibly effective at revitalising damaged hair because they enhance the keratin and collagen content.
Although I have not had the La Brasiliana treatment, I now regularly use the after-treatment shampoo and conditioner. The result has been impressive; this is the first shampoo and conditioner I have tried that dramatically improves the appearance of my hair, making it stronger and healthier. Available from LookFantastic.com for under £12 each, these highly concentrated products also last a long time.

The secret to thick hair…and a slim waist!
There are endless products that promise to give you healthy, glossy and volumised hair - some are more effective than others. Tales of the Pink Bike has discovered one hair enhancer that bypasses the lotions and potions, yet gives you thicker and fuller locks from root to tip.
Sea Kelp, which is more commonly known as a herbal weight loss aid, is incredibly efficient in encouraging hair growth. The secret was first revealed by my modelling colleague, Charlotte McCabe (pictured left). To the disbelief of many, Charlotte's Pocahontas style hair is 100% natural and not enhanced with extensions. She credits Sea Kelp with helping her locks grow so long, whilst maintaining astonishing thickness.
This summer mum and I decided to try Sea Kelp and after taking the tablets every day for several months we have both noticed a dramatic improvement. Discipline is important and you need consumer the tablets for a significant period as they encourage healthier growth at the root; therefore it may take some time before you recognise the improved thickness.
As previously mentioned, Sea Kelp is normally associated with weight management as it is one of the best natural sources of the mineral Iodine. Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormone, which plays a role in growth, development and metabolic rate.
Sea Kelp is available from all leading health stores and not only does it help you achieve thicker hair, but it also supports weight management - the perfect supplement!

Return of the Tux & Tie trend

Kate Moss, Fearne Cotton, Halle Berry and Winona Ryder are just some of the stylish celebrities leading the revival of the Tux & Tie trend.
As reported by the Daily Mail, fashion icon Moss, was pictured leaving the Groucho Club in London last night (right) wearing a skinny tie and blazer.
Those looking to follow hot on the heels of the supermodel should take a look at Jigsaw's Crepe Tuxedo Tailored Blazer (below). Chic detailing in the form of covered mattress buttons and a velvet top collar make this jacket a stunning and sophisticated choice.
Tales of the Pink Bike is a fan of the androgynous look but suggests shopping for elegant pieces, in order to mirror this classic look.

Mr World plans spectacular charity stunts
Daring Kamal Ibrahim raises funds for The Variety Club
This week, Kamal Ibrahim, in association with Bucks Townhouse, launched his Fundraising and Awareness campaign for The Variety Club of Ireland. The charity helps sick, disabled and disadvantaged children. The reigning Mr World hopes to raise up to €10,000 and increase awareness for Variety by completing a spectacular 200 skydives - he is already close to this target, having reached 189.
Kamal pictured with models Karena Graham and Michele McGrath;
and below with Olivia Kenealy
The daring model will also hang from a helicopter hovering at 4,000 feet, and the longer he hangs, the more money he will raise. Kamal won't be using any harnesses to hold him in place for this stunt; instead he will wear a parachute and hopefully land safely in the crowd below. If that wasn't enough, Kamal is also planning to break the record for the highest jump ever attempted in the Ireland by leaping from a plane at 30,000 feet.
Buck Whaley's have sponsored the entire event and are partners in the fundraising campaign. Kamal is incredibly determined to raise much needed funds for Variety and refuses to let the recent bad weather deter him from completing the amazing stunts; "Nothing is going to stop me from doing this, I made a promise to my sponsors and to the charity and I'm going to see it through".

This week's *Fabulous Fashionista* is Irish model Nadia Forde. Nadia recently caused a stir on the showbiz scene after opting to change her trademark golden blonde locks to deep brunette, for the winter months.
Nadia's new look has been well received in fashion circles and the model is more in demand than ever before with her sophisticated new image.
Last weekend, Nadia attended Keith Duffy's Masquerade Ball (in aid of Irish Autism Action), as a guest of Bucks Townhouse - the Assets model is a regular at the celebrity haunt.
With a busy schedule ahead, we will no doubt be seeing plenty more of this ambitious beauty in the run up to Christmas.

Winter TLC
Show your skin and nails some love
It's easy to forget about your toes at this time of year. After all, they spend most of the day buried at the bottom of winter boots. On my recent visit to Cowley Manor for a Ford event, I decided to give my footies some TLC - and boy did they appreciate it!
After driving the new Ford C-MAX (yes the car which parks itself!) pictured left, I visited Cowley's luxurious spa. With an array of treatments to choose from, I decided to indulge by having one of the pedicures. After an hour-long treatment, my feet were in pristine condition and my toenails were beautifully decorated in seasonal rouge.
The Big Freeze can play havoc with our skin and nails, and not everyone has the time, or budget, for spa treatments on a regular basis. Tales of the Pink Bike has found a quick fix, home-treatment for those wanting to pamper their skin during the snowy period.
Boots has a low cost face care range called 'Tee Tree + Witch Hazel'. Begin by using the 'Exfoliating Face Scrub' pictured right, which unclogs pores and helps skin to look smooth and even. This can be followed by the 'Peel Off Face Mask', which gives your skin a deep clean, tightens pores and helps remove any blackheads. Finally, pamper your skin by applying the 'Night Treatment Gel', which works intensively while you sleep.

Help! Dress needed urgently for Miss Great Britain final!
Beauty queen, Charlotte McCabe, is searching
for the perfect dress
As previously reported on Tales of the Pink Bike, my modelling colleague and good friend, Charlotte McCabe, has won a place in the Miss Great Britain competition. Charlotte was crowned Miss South East earlier this year and the raven haired beauty is currently searching for a show-stopping dress to wear at the national final, which takes place next weekend.

A car that parks itself
The new Ford C-max can park perfectly-all on its own!
Last weekend Tales of the Pink Bike was invited to test drive the latest addition to the Ford fleet; the stylish C-MAX. The event took place at Cowley Manor, a luxurious hotel and spa situated in the Cotswold's.
On my arrival, I was kindly offered the ride on a beautiful cream bike (pictured right) and I will publish more of the Cream Bike photographs at a later date. The real excitement began when the opportunity arose to test drive the new Ford C-MAX.
I was able to test the car whilst travelling to a festive cookery course hosted by Daylesford Organic Farm. The C-MAX provided a very smooth ride through the country lanes and also demonstrated good acceleration and control on the main roads. However, I was left speechless by one key feature; the automatic parking.
This fabulous car guarantees that you will execute the perfect parallel park... every time! Whilst driving down a busy street you can simply press a button, which automatically searches for an available space.

Once the car identifies a suitable gap, all you have to do is sit back and relax as the steering wheel turns automatically, and the car parks itself to perfection. The driver can control the speed of the park, but the car is responsible for alignment.
Not only does the new Ford C-MAX take control of parking, but the spacious interior makes it suitable for travelling with a group of friends, or family.
The new model has only just been released, and although the Pink Bike has a very special place in my heart, this car ranks highly on my list of desirable transport. The car is now available for purchase in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Stay tuned to Tales of the Pink Bike for more news from my magical Ford weekend, including details of some relaxing spa treatments and a secret recipe for the perfect Christmas pudding.
More details of the new Ford C-MAX are available HERE.

Healthy November
Wear those tight Jeans!
We all hate it when jeans start to feel a little tight. It's very tempting to throw them into the darkest depths of the wardrobe and pretend they don't exist. Leggings and tights seem a much more comfortable option; after all, they expand with the waistline so you never feel plump.
However, as tempting as it might be, I have decided that shoving my Jeans to the back of the closet is not a wise step. Instead, you need to wear them at least twice a week.
The method behind my madness? Well, Jeans actually provide a simple way of keeping track of your waistline; if they start to feel tight, they are a helpful reminder to avoid enticing treats on a daily basis.
Although leggings are ultra-fashionable at the moment, and Jeans might not be the most comfortable item of clothing, they definitely help monitor the waistline. I've decided it is best to save my leggings for those special treat days.

Anne's mission to discover Ireland's high-fashion models
Model headhunted to re-launch new agency for future international talent
Anne Morgan (below right) is gearing up to challenge Ireland's top modelling agencies after she was headhunted to re-launch the fashion section of Platinum Agency and Entertainment.
Although Dublin seems overrun with various agencies at present, Anne believes there is a huge gap in the high fashion sector.
Whilst successfully running the Elite Model Look contest earlier this year, the astute beauty toured the country and found some striking natural talent, which she hopes to bring to the fore with Platinum. "While there may be almost too many agencies in Dublin alone, I found that when I travelled the country with Elite, there was a lot of young girls with extremely high fashion looks who are not currently represented. Sarah McDonald (below) was one of the unique girls we discovered and there are many more out there like her. That is what I want to focus on initially, rather than the girls that may be good for Dublin's presscall industry."
Anne has oodles of experience both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, "I work with Absolute School of Modelling and when this opportunity with Platinum arose, I wanted to go for it. It will no doubt be a slow start as it is tough for any new business, but my main priority are the models at this point and getting them out there and developing their confidence. I'm not focused on trying to be the next big agency; rather I'm happy just to represent a particular type of model, which is predominantly high fashion at the moment."

'Healthy November'
Detox, diet and exercise tips
At the moment I am enjoying 'Healthy November'. With the Christmas party season fast-approaching, I thought it would be good preparation to have a month of self-control and detox!
So far, it has been going well. I have either cut-out or significantly reduced excesses and also increased my daily exercise. I have even lost a couple of pounds already!
One key tip for my 'Healthy November' is to have a large bowl of soup for lunch. Not only is soup very warming on these cold winter days, it also satisfies my rather big appetite and often has a relatively low calorie count.
Fresh soups are particularly appealing and there is a large variety of flavours available on supermarket selves. Enjoying soup at lunch is definitely a key tip for anyone who wants to watch their waistline in the run-up to party season.
Stay tuned to Tales of the Pink Bike for more 'Healthy November' tips…

Dieting can help beat cancer
British scientists claim even a two-day diet can reduce your risk of cancer
Tales of the Pink Bike discovered an interesting health fact in this week's edition of Reveal magazine.
British scientists have found that dieting, even for just two days a week, can cut the risk of breast cancer. A study of 100 overweight women found that once they embarked on a calorie counting diet for six months, cancer-causing hormones were reduced by up to 40%.
So, if you find a daily diet too restricting then monitoring your food intake even for just two days a week could help reduce your risk of cancer.

POWDER.PUFF
A solution to Amanda's problem...
Yesterday, Tales of the Pink Bike featured a fantastic new product called 'Backcomb In A Bottle'. The spray adds extra volume, and prevents your hair from being damaged by traditional backcombing methods.
However, shortly after the product tip went live on Tales of the Pink Bike, uber glamorous Irish model and bestselling authoress, Amanda Brunker (pictured right), gave some feedback about a negative experience of the product.
Unfortunately for the lovely Amanda, a can of 'Backcomb In A Bottle' exploded in her handbag, creating a rather nasty mess - every girl's worst nightmare.
Tales of the Pink Bike was concerned by Amanda's story and quickly set about sourcing an alternative product for those fearing their favourite handbag could suffer a similar fate.
So, if you are craving volumised hair this season, without the risk of a messy ending, POWDER.PUFF by Kevin Murphy provides the perfect option.
Kevin Murphy is Australia's leading celebrity hairstylist and POWDER.PUFF will be available in the UK and Ireland next month.
The light powder is a great way to add extra volume to your tresses and morphs into a stronger product once sprinkled over your hair.

POWDER.PUFF will be available for purchase at www.lookfantastic.com
Meanwhile, Amanda's latest novel, Champagne Babes, is available nationwide in Ireland and the UK.
Also, look out for the bubbly blonde in next week's edition of OK Magazine.

Tales of the Pink Bike has discovered a fantastic new product by Umberto Giannini in the new 'Glam Hair' range.
After attending the exclusive catwalk launch held last week at private members club, Home House, Tales of the Pink Bike was lucky enough to test some of the exciting new products.
Big hair is in vogue this season; but the big problem with big hair is that it requires an awful lot of the dreaded backcombing. This is incredibly damaging as strands weaken and break, which is certainly not desirable when trying to achieve big hair!
However, Umberto Giannini has saved the day with a brilliant new product called, 'Backcomb In A Bottle'. The spray provides instant texture and the same volume as backcombed hair.
Stylists are describing it as, "the must-have product to achieve full on glamour and up-do's without wrecking your hair".
Tales of the Pink Bike can vouch for this - it really is a miracle product well worth testing!
'Backcomb In A Bottle' is available exclusively from Boots

Head-turning hairstyles at the
Umberto Giannini Catwalk Show
A celebrity audience celebrate the new 'Glam Hair' range
This week Tales of the Pink Bike attended the Umberto Giannini Glam Hair Catwalk Show. The event marked the launch of a fabulous new range called 'Glam Hair'.
Celebrity model, Amber Le Bon, led the way on the catwalk with a dramatic beehive hairstyle. The stunning daughter of Simon and Yasmin Le Bon, was recently announced as the face (and hair!) of the new Umberto Giannini collection.
The show took place at Home House, a sumptuous, neo-classical private members club near Marble Arch. Prior to being seated, guests enjoyed champagne and canapés in the Georgian townhouse.
The event was supported by various well known faces, including the lovely BBC 'One Show' presenter, Alex Jones (left). Sophie Anderton (bottom right) looked incredibly slim in black skinny jeans and an autumnal blouse.
Charming Calum Best, son of late British soccer legend George, was also in attendance (right).
Flamboyant hairstyles were showcased on the catwalk, and the audience was transfixed by the bold creations. The exciting new range is available exclusively at Boots, and is dedicated to producing fabulously sculpted tresses. 'Glam Hair' allows you to create voluptuous, inventive looks that ooze glamour and feminine allure.
For those followers of Tales of the Pink Bike who are looking for head-turning hair styles this season, this is a range not to be missed.

Want a super hot body for the party season?
Think ahead and start your new workout today
The party season is fast approaching. Halloween is just around the corner and Christmas will soon be upon us. If you are hoping to dazzle the festive crowds with a super-svelte figure this season, then now is the perfect time to start a new workout.
Toning up takes time, but if you plan ahead, the trim figure you are dreaming about is easily attainable by December.
Of course, the best way to flex those muscles is by hopping on a Pink Bike! Cycling is an easy way to incorporate exercise into a busy schedule, and allows you to workout whilst on-the-go. If you don't own a bike, but would still like to cycle in the city, then why not try the city bike schemes that are running in both Dublin and London.

If you normally take the bus or tube to work, then perhaps consider getting off a few stops early to incorporate a brisk walk into your routine.
Running or power walking is a great way to shed stubborn pounds and you can also transform your workout into a social occasion. Last year, I began a club called 'Dublin Strutters' and arranged to power walk with a group of girlfriends three times a week. At the weekend we would treat ourselves to a hill walk in beautiful countryside.
If you are a lady who likes the gym but you want to work out in an all female environment, then Curves is an ideal venue for getting in shape. The women only fitness club is offering guests an eight week trial session (runs from 1st November - 30th December), for a fantastic all inclusive price of €79. The pre-Christmas warm up is guaranteed to leave you looking and feeling fabulous in that little black dress. The Curves programme works on building muscle tissue and raising metabolism, therefore turning the body into a fat burning machine.
So, if you are looking to tone up in time for the party season, think ahead and start a new workout today.

The Winonna
My new favourite shoe

I am currently in love with the gorgeous Winonna shoe from Rockin' Reptile. The grey suede peep toe is covered with gold studs and also has a bright red finish on the sole. The heel is 4.5 inches and there is a 1 inch platform. The shoe is extremely comfortable and moulds to your foot.
I chose to wear my Winonnas in Dublin last Wednesday evening when celebrating the submission of my PhD (left). Check out the Rockin' Reptile website for more information about the Autumn/Winter collection.

Tired of plucking, shaping and colouring?
London's hottest new eyebrow treatment has come to the rescue
A brand new eyebrow treatment is taking London by storm. Tracie Giles already has a waiting list for the Power Brow treatment, which helps replicate the designer brow recently shown at London Fashion Week. Models for Chanel (pictured below) and Prada were seen sporting strong and defined eyebrows on the catwalk, encouraging a new global trend.
Tracie Giles, who has been dubbed 'Queen of the Brows', has recently launched a treatment that provides fashion savvy women with perfect eyebrows all year round. The semi-permanent procedure uses the latest digital technology which strengthens, defines and shapes brows, whilst infusing delicate strokes of pigment into the skin. The 3D hair technique precisely replicates natural hair and gives the face total symmetry.
Giles is renowned for her pigment expertise and has redefined the brows of many celebrities. For those followers of Tales of the Pink Bike who hanker after the perfect pair of brows, Tracie's team of experts at The London Centre of Permanent Make Up promise to achieve colour-rich, designer brows using natural and pure mineral pigments.

PhD submission
Celebratory drinks in The Grafton Lounge followed by a yummy meal at Saba
Yesterday I reached a milestone. After four years of hard work I submitted my PhD thesis at University College Dublin. It is a weight off my shoulders - literally - the four printed copies required for examination weighed a ton!!
The PhD makes it journey through the airport
My research concerns social and community informatics and I have specifically been investigating the impact of technology on social interaction and community participation.
I am indebted to the funding that I have received from the Ad Astra PhD Scholarship Programme and also my UCD Postgraduate Scholarship. My supervisor, colleagues and the students I have taught at UCD have been incredibly supportive throughout the process. Although I may have tested the patience of my friends and family at times, their encouragement during the ups and downs of the 'PhD journey' has been crucial.
Once onboard the plane it is strapped securely into a seat!
The thesis is over 300 pages long. After spending a substantial amount of time working on the research, it is a rather surreal experience waking up in the morning and no longer seeing it on my bedside table! I was very anxious right up until the point when I actually handed over the thesis, but now I have some time to relax before my viva. I am thrilled to have reached this point; thank you so much to everyone who has helped me along the way.
I travelled to Dublin with my mother and to celebrate the submission I met some close friends in The Grafton Lounge for early evening drinks. The Grafton Lounge is an elegant bar located near Grafton Street. The venue is perfect for daytime use, and also remains open late in the evening. It was an ideal place to catch up with friends and enjoy some celebratory drinks.
A much needed celebratory drink in The Grafton Lounge
(l-r) Dominique Cullen, Laura Toogood
Rosanna Davison and Kerrie McMahon
To concur with Tales of the Pink Bike I was very kindly presented with a bottle of pink champagne by The Grafton Lounge, which was accompanied by a thoughtful card. The staff are incredibly hospitable and I would like to thank them for such a lovely evening. After enjoying the atmosphere in the venue, we proceeded to Saba for a scrumptious meal. For those followers of Tales of the Pink Bike who favour Thai cuisine, I can not recommend Saba highly enough. Similarly, next time you're out shopping and fancy a coffee break, or would like to relax somewhere stylish after work, then pop into The Grafton Lounge. Reservations can be made HERE.

Follow in Kylie's footsteps
Shoe of the week by 'Rockin' Reptile'

Pop princess, Kylie Minogue, is a leading trendsetter and last week she was spotted in London wearing some seriously stylish shoes. Among her collection are these black pumps from Yves Saint Laurent (pictured left and below).
The striking feather detail on the heel sets them apart from a traditional black stiletto; however, at nearly £500 a pair, they certainly don't come cheap.

Yet fear not fashionistas - 'Rockin' Reptile' has saved the day, and style queens can affordably follow in Kylie's footsteps by wearing the Mina shoe. With ruffle detail on the heel, the black suede shoe (pictured below left) provides plenty of height, with a 4.5 inch heel combined with a 1 inch platform.

To stride ahead in the style stakes and follow in Kylie's footsteps, check out the Autumn/Winter collection pictured on the 'Rockin' Reptile' website. You can also send an EMAIL to request more information about your favourite shoes.

'Acting is an unpredictable industry'
Ambitious actress, Leigh Arnold, warns others about following in her footsteps, explaining that her profession does not always lead to fame and fortune
Tales of the Pink Bike recently caught up with Dublin-born actress, Leigh Arnold. After a successful stint on RTE drama, The Clinic, the charismatic star has taken to the stage. With a cosmetics campaign under her belt, the ambitious beauty talks to Tales of the Pink Bike about her passion for acting, her hopes for the future, and reveals some exciting developments, which may just see her take the world by storm...

Leigh Arnold is recognisable to many from her role in RTE drama, The Clinic. The talented actress, who trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, attributes her role in the show as her first big break in the competitive world of acting; "I had just finished a play off Broadway, and I was a bit homesick as a result of being away from Ireland for over four years. I heard about this new RTE show and I sent the producer my details. I was so lucky to be part of a hugely successful production and The Clinic was much loved."
"I am hoping that my next job will be on film - my poor body needs a break!"
The series came to an end earlier this year. Although Leigh expressed disappointment at the conclusion of the drama, it has enabled her to progress in a new direction; "All of the cast were very lucky to be part of The Clinic, however I am delighted that I now have the opportunity to explore new roles. Acting is an unpredictable industry, and I have been very lucky so far. I have now progressed to stage productions and I adore it, but I have to admit that I do find it utterly exhausting. I am hoping that my next job will be on film - my poor body needs a break!"
Leigh's current production is called Dracula, which is taking place in the Tivoli theatre; "It is a wonderful gothic story with an incredibly talented cast. I play Mina Harker who is Dracula's love interest, and the heroine of the play, so it's a great role to get my teeth into - literally!"
"There is the possibility that I may be doing some work for [GOSH] outside Ireland"
The petite brunette also made a strong impact on the beauty industry earlier this year when she was announced as the face of GOSH cosmetics for Ireland, "I am delighted to be working with GOSH and it involves a great deal of appearances and promotions. There is also the possibility that I may be doing some work for them outside Ireland, which is very exciting."
However, it is not only Leigh's endorsement duties that may see her gracing foreign shores, "At the moment, much of my acting is based in Ireland, but I also hope to work abroad. As an actress, it is imperative to be flexible regarding work commitments incase you have to relocate for a role."
Although Leigh is fiercely ambitious when it comes to her career, at heart she is a homely girl; "I want keep working as much as possible over the coming months, and not be afraid of taking risks and dipping into unfamiliar markets. However, fundamentally I want to be happy and healthy."
The petite brunette is passionate about her profession; "I suppose what I ultimately love about acting is creating a character that has their own world and life, and making it believable to the audience. It is a great challenge, and the rehearsal period always allows you to explore a role. I also love the teamwork involved in any show-everybody has an invaluable part to play."
"I would suggest looking at other career options"
Although her career gives her a great sense of fulfillment, Leigh is cautious about advising others to follow in her footsteps; "For those starting out in the business, it is important not to be under any illusions. You must not think that it is a glamorous industry with lots of money. It is often very tough, with most actors struggling to make a living. Unless there is absolutely nothing else you want to do in life, and you are completely devoted to acting, then I would suggest looking at other career options."
Leigh's flourishing career comes as a result of extensive training, hard work, and an extremely determined attitude. As for the future, her ambition is unlikely to be curtailed; "My long term plans are to direct and produce theatre and film, as well as continue acting. I also want all the other things a lady wants in life!" she quips.
With hardy drive and a strong sense of motivation, Leigh Arnold is a lady who makes no qualms about wanting it all; and boy is she focused on getting it all.

Charlotte needs your vote!
Vote Miss South East to win Miss Great Britain
Earlier this year, my good friend Charlotte McCabe won the 'Miss South East' beauty pageant. As a result she has qualified for 'Miss Great Britain'.
A public vote has just begun in the competition. The winner will be fast-tracked to the final 12 and awarded the title, 'Miss Popularity'. The first runner up will automatically qualify for the top 25.
Charlotte is a professional model and we both work for the same agencies in Dublin and London (Assets Models & Target International). With her long, raven locks and toned physique, Charlotte is regularly compared to Hollywood highflyer, Demi Moore. After living in Dublin for a couple of years, she has now returned to her native London. Charlotte is one of the kindest and most genuine models I have met. It would be fantastic if followers of Tales of the Pink Bike would get behind her bid to become the next Miss Great Britain.
If you would like to show your support for Charlotte, you can text MISS SOUTH EAST to 81118. Each vote will cost £1.00 plus a standard network charge. Voting finishes on Friday 3rd December at noon.
